The Ethics Committee is responsible for advising Senate on the development, implementation and review of institutional procedures and guidelines relating to ethical issues arising from teaching, research and other related institutional activities. The role of the Ethics Committee is to be proactive in relation to emerging issues of institutional, national or international significance but will be reactive in relation to providing guidance for individual members of staff or Department/Schools.

Terms of Reference
Approved by Senate 20th May 1998, revised 24th March 1999, 15th June 2006 and 19th October 2011.

The Ethics Committee will be responsible for advising Senate on the development, implementation and review of institutional procedures and guidelines relating to ethical issues arising from teaching, research and other related institutional activities. The role of the Ethics Committee will be proactive in relation to emerging issues of institutional, national or international significance but will be reactive in relation to providing guidance for individual members of staff or Department/Schools. Its terms of reference will be as follows:

  1. to advise Senate on the development of institutional policies and guidelines relating to ethical issues arising from teaching, research and other related institutional activities;
  2. to advise Senate on the development, publication and review of criteria to be applied to research sponsorship;
  3. to contribute to the promulgation of good practice within the institution;
  4. to provide advice to Department/Schools and individual members of staff on ethical issues arising from teaching, research and institutional practice;
  5. to formulate institutional responses to national and international developments relating to ethical issues;
  6. to consider any matters referred to the Committee by Council, Senate, the Research Committee, Boards of Studies, Departments/Schools and individual members of staff;
  7. to monitor ethical practise within the University and the operation of Research Ethics Committees, receiving annual reports where appropriate.
