PGCE
Postgraduate Certificate of Education (Masters Level)
Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (Honours Level)
The PGCE
The one year PGCE is the most common route for graduates into teaching. The Department offers both the Postgraduate Certificate in Education and the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education in all subject areas. The former include M level credit which can be used towards an MA in Education and the latter is awarded at H (Honours) level.
In line with the requirements of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, all providers of Initial Teacher Education must, from September 2007, make a distinction between the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education, to be studied at Masters level, and the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, to be studied at Honours level. Successful completion of either programme, including passing the Skills Tests, in literacy, numeracy and ICT, will lead to Qualified Teacher Status.
The University of Bath offers both awards and applicants who are successful through our admissions process will be given information and guidance about the two awards during the first week of the course and asked to make the choice to study for either the Masters level or Honours level award at that point.
Secondary (11-18 yrs) subjects offered are:
English, History, Information Technology, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Physical Education and Science (with specialisms in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics)
Middle Years (7–14 yrs) subjects:
English and Science
The PGCE course award and recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) are assessed by tutors from the University and the Professional Tutors and Subject Mentors based in the Partnership schools.
We place a strong emphasis on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and have a strong MA in Education programme which our former trainees are encouraged to consider as they establish their teaching careers.
