I spoke to someone at the Carbon TRust who told me that when he was inspecting the kitchens of a caterer one summer, even though the energy efficiency of the equipment was good, staff were deliberately leaving the doors open to cool themselves down!h

Retailers such as Waitrose are also experimenting with waste to energy technology. According to Tara Garnett of the Food Climate Research network, Waitrose is using food waste and other biodegradable matter such as paper plates from 5 stores to feed an anaerobic digester. The process will produce methane which can generate electricity and a fertiliser for crops. If the pilot is a success, Waitrose plans to roll it out to other stores.

I’m enjoying browsing this site but I can’t post anything other than comments yet. I’m in touch with researchers who develop low carbon technologies in the lab but then have problems developing them commercially. I’d like to tell their stories too.

Welcome, Michelle. Thanks for flagging up your interest in the role of the retailer in technological development. I’ll let you know when something of interest on this topic comes in.
Sometime soon you will be able to set up an RSS feed from particular parts of the site so that you can be automaticaly notified of new posts on areas of particular interest.
In the projects section, there is a brief introduction to your own work. I hope you will keep us posted on the site as things get underway. It would be interesting to see if the site can be used to record some of the learning from ongoing “live” case studies.
For instance, you could record some impressions from a meeting and invite others onto the site to add their own comments or links to posts on what you have written. You would need to flag this up as a possibility early in the process of building relationships with project partners.

I enjoyed reading your profile and can relate to the comment about trying to juggle work and home life! The power of the retailer in determining the speed and direction of technological developments is also a topic that I hope we will expand on more through the website - and would welcome hearing stories from other contributors on this important topic.
